Sports analytics: quantile foliation to rank athletes
Quantile foliation is a new statistical method that we can use to standardize weightlifting performances simultaneously according to age and body weight, and thus provide a ranking of athletes' performances in terms of quantiles (percentiles), thus creating “leaves” or surfaces. It is a generalization of quantile regression when making sure that quantiles do not cross. This method formed the basis of creating age coefficients for performance decline at older ages now incorporated in the competition rule book of the International Weightlifting Federation Master Committee and for qualifying standards at international weightlifting competitions.
