CSTAT is hiring a data analyst
The MSU Center for Statistical Training and Consulting (http://cstat.msu.edu/) is part of Michigan State University’s infrastructure for facilitating excellence in research. It is a professional service and research unit. We provide statistical support and collaborate with MSU faculty, research staff, and graduate students and external clients (government agencies, businesses, non-profit organizations).
CSTAT is seeking to hire a Statistical Data Analyst with excellent statistical programming, analysis, and data management skills and the ability to apply them to both CSTAT’s operations and research studies. The Data Analyst will work with the Director and Associate Director to carry out CSTAT’s mission and will work independently or in teams with Research Specialists to provide statistical services to our clients. We are seeking a person who can increase the quality and quantity of sponsored research at MSU by contributing to pre-award statistical collaboration, including grant proposal preparation, writing data management sections for proposals, and managing data repositories for research groups.
The incumbent will (1) serve as data analyst, project coordinator, or data manager on projects on grant proposals, (2) apply statistical, computational, data management, and scientific expertise to the design, implementation, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of research and administrative studies; (3) assist CSTAT personnel with CSTAT’s operations data base, data base design and management; (4) prepare cost estimates for research projects; (5) participate in developing or delivering CSTAT workshops to the general University audience. This is a full-time position.
Minimum Qualifications
The job requires: knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Master's in Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, or related field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in statistical methods or data management and analysis; experience with computer programming, relational databases, and at least one statistical software program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong interpersonal skills and written and oral communication skills, including proficiency with the English language, are essential.
Desired Qualifications
Experience using multiple statistical methods at the level of a degree program in statistics; two or more years of experience using at least one major statistical software program (e.g. R, Python, SAS, STATA, or others); two or more years of experience with computer programming; ability to evaluate data quality and improve metadata aspects using common statistical software programs; experience with SQL and/or other relational databases; track record demonstrating success in collaborative research projects and report writing; two or more years of experience in statistical collaboration or data management and analysis; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; experience preparing instructional materials on database and data management concepts, tools, methods, and practices, or experience teaching using them; highly self-motivated, excellent organizational and project management skills.
