CSTAT DAY!

9:00AM – 4:30PM
Zoom

SCHEDULE

9:10 - 9:55 AM Steve Pierce (CSTAT):  Collaborating with Statisticians: Enhancing Rigor and Reproducibility by Partnering with CSTAT

  • This presentation will cover how collaborating with statisticians can contribute to improving the rigor and reproducibility of research projects. We will discuss the services CSTAT offers, how to obtain them, the roles statisticians may have on a project, and how a statistician can help you at different stages of a study, from initial planning all the way to publishing papers and responding to reviewers. We will talk about collaborating on grant proposals and funded projects. Finally, we will offer advice on how you can facilitate the statistician’s efforts to engage with and support your project.

10:00 - 10:45 AM Barry DeCicco (CSTAT):  How to prepare data for import into statistical software

  • Statistical software is very picky about what it eats, and this can cause problems and errors when trying to analyze your data.  This presentation will show you how to both import it easily and spot errors before they cause trouble.

10:50 - 11:35 AM Scout Calvert (MSU Libraries):  Getting Started with Research Data Management with MSU Libraries as Your Partner

  • This presentation provides strategies for research data management and complying with funder requirements for data sharing. It will also introduce tools and resources for every phase in the research data lifecycle, along with support offerings from MSU Libraries.

11:35 AM - 12:15 PM  LUNCH

12:15 PM - 12:45 PM Marianne Huebner (CSTAT. Dept of Statistics):  A few simple rules for reproducibility

  • Many things can affect reproducibility of research studies and interpretability and transparency of findings. We discuss a few aspects that can help you with your research projects revolving around data and data analysis, such as “get organized” and “think before you analyze.”

12:50 PM - 1:20 PM Marianne Huebner (CSTAT. Dept of Statistics): Study designs and writing papers

  • The choice of a study design depends on the research question. This presentation will show elements of observational studies, randomized trials, or systematic reviews. Reporting guidelines for such studies help you with transparent and accurate reporting in published research. We briefly discuss sections of a paper and what key elements of the study should be included.

1:25 PM - 2:10 PM Wenjuan Ma  (CSTAT): Intro to confirmatory factor analysis (CFA)

  • This presentation provides fundamental knowledge about CFA and structural equation modeling in general. I will also use examples to demonstrate how to interpret the results of CFA models.

2:15 - 3:00 PM Shay Yao (CSTAT):  Introducing PROCESS Macro: a User-Friendly Tool for Path Analysis

  • Mediation and conditional process analysis has become more and more utilized in todays’ scientific research. However, structural equation modeling programs such as Mplus and R require specialized programming skills and the codes have to be highly tailored to the specific dataset. In this presentation I will introduce PROCESS macro for SPSS, which is a tool for mediation and conditional process analysis that is easy to learn and requires little computational skill.

3:00 PM - 3:35 PM  BREAK

3:35 PM - 4:00 PM Dhruv Sharma (CSTAT):  Intro to Meta-analysis and Systematic Reviews

  • This presentation provides a brief introduction to the process involved in conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis from the planning stage, through the selection of appropriate statistical techniques and effect sizes, through the issues involved in analyzing data, to the interpretation of results.

4:00 PM - 4:45 PM VIRTUAL OPEN HOUSE, Q+A in the Main Zoom room (CSTAT) or Breakout Rooms (Gradate student theses, Data management, Workshops and Seminars) .
