An Introduction to the Relational Database Model
Dr. Dan Hayes, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, MSU
In many scientific disciplines, we offer formal classes on how to collect data and how to analyze data but neglect the step of managing data. In this seminar, I will cover the basics of developing a relational database. One of the key concepts is that we typically store data differently than how it is structured for analysis. Storing data in a relational structure enhances database integrity but requires using queries to configure the data appropriately for analysis. I will emphasize the logic behind developing a relational database architecture but will use R to illustrate some basic database operations that are needed to re-configure the data.
Prerequisites: This seminar is for quantitative scientists. Knowledge of R is helpful, but not required.
*This seminar is available for RECR Credit, 1.5 Hours, Attendance will be verified and a survey must be completed afterwards with well thought out responses to receive RECR Credit.
