The MSU Center for Statistical Training and Consulting (CSTAT) is a professional service and research unit at Michigan State University.
We understand that high quality and impactful research does not emerge in isolated environments but rather thrives from diverse input, communication, and cultivating partnerships.
We are committed to continuing professional development to strive for best practices in statistical methodology, scientific rigor, and reproducibility. For example, we
provide expertise and guidance on study design, statistical methods, interpretation of results, and conduct statistical analyses
participate in grant proposal applications with design and methods considerations and sample size determination
provide research data management services
collaborate on manuscripts and serve as co-authors
offer training and education in data management, statistical methods, and responsible conduct of research
We collaborate on research projects and provide statistical support to MSU scholars and off-campus clients.
Statistical Consulting Service was formalized in 1986 by the Department of Statistics and Probability with graduate student consultants and co-directed by Dennis Gilliland and Connie Page.
Through efforts of many faculty from different colleges, CSTAT was stablished by the MSU Foundation in 2004. CSTAT is now partially funded by Office of Research and Innovation, The Graduate School, College/Unit partnerships, and contracts and grants.
Currently, CSTAT team members collaborate on approximately 370 projects/year with faculty, staff, or graduate students. This includes a growing number of research projects with external collaborators.
CSTAT is connected nationally with leaders from statistical collaboration and consulting centers from several US universities to collaborate on best practices. CSTAT hosts internationally renowned statisticians to give presentations on various topics of statistical methods and responsible conduct of research.
CSTAT Advisory Board
Members of the CSTAT Advisory Board collaborate to advise, support, and promote CSTAT’s mission and programs. The board's role is to:
Develop an understanding of the goals and mission of CSTAT and assist in forming visions to keep our program relevant for the future.
